If Leopard is released before Vist I won;\'t go near it with a 20 meter cattle prod and even if they gave it away for free. Leopard released that soon would scream revenge of the Tiger launch. Honestly a january lauch of eather Vista or Leopard doesn't serve anyone. For windows they missed the lucrative holiday sales rush and only the after x-mas bargan shoppers are looking to buy in ist quarter. For Apple school sales won't begin for months.
All that a January Leopard launch would prove would be the immaturity of the people running Apple. e.g. Its better to ship an OS that probably has a ton of bugs in it to be able to thumb our collective noses at MS then ship a solid product. IMHO I'm REALLY hoping for a WWDC launch of Leopard.

If Apple releases Leopard before March, it will likely be a mistake. How about version 10.5.-3?

Not any more than I can hold that her own stupidity led to this as well.

Like I said previously, putting yourself in harm's way should not in any way absolve you from blame for what happens. When you use yourself as a human shield, you're going to get hurt - why should it be the other guy's fault?
I have to disagree. I doubt she was knowingly placing herself in harm's way. Jumping on the hood of a vehicle is dramatic, but I doubt she expected her husband to start driving, much less at speeds of 100 mph. As he started moving, she probably expected him to stop briefly to let her off; instead he just kept driving faster and faster.

Unless she could reasonably foresee her husband driving on the freeway at 100 mph with her still on the hood, then she did not "knowingly place herself in harm's way." And I don't think his actions were reasonably foreseeable by any means.

Besides, let's say for example that Spouse A is holding a gun, and Spouse B jumps in front of the gun to prevent "A" from shooting his/her favorite Ming Dynasty Vase (it's a priceless original, after all). Spouse A shoots anyway, killing Spouse B. ...Who's to blame? Spouse A for pulling the trigger, or Spouse B for protecting their vase? Even if standing in front of a gun is "stupid," I think it hardly fair to hold Spouse B accountable for Spouse A's actions of pulling the trigger.

It simply isn't acceptable to try to kill your wife, and that's exactly what this man did.

If a husband wanted to leave and his wife blocked the car, then you walk. You call a cab, take a bus, call a friend. You don't drive at speeds of 100 mph with her on the hood, unless stopping endangers your life as well (but nothing in the story indicates this to be the case). It's an inexcusable action, regardless of the circumstances.

At Apple's prices, it's hard to understand how any business can justify switching to Xserve. Sorry, but I can buy several Dells with the same CPUs and RAM for what Apple is charging. This is unbelieveable. I canb buy SuperMicro or Tyan 1U barebones and assemble all the remaining CPUs/components myself and set it up in about 2 to 3 hours and probably still come out 1/5th the price of the Xserve. This just makes absolutely no sense at all.

Does that include unlimited Windows server? I assume you are using Linux though.

But does Apple care? Do they WANT a marketshare that big? Do they NEED a marketshare that big? I'm not sure that their business model requires them to grow in such a way. And in fact, it may be detrimental to the product they put out, and the speed at which they do it. Seems to me they're doing just fine with the marketshare they have.

That's a great point. I hear, "the goal of every business is to make money" here on Macrumors a lot, but Apple is doing very well, and as long as they make money because they are designing amazing technology, not the other way around, they're doing just fine by me.

I can't help but wonder what the folks over at AVID are thinking of the new Final Cut Pro X. They are either terrified, or they have huge smiles on their faces thinking about all the new users they might be picking up this summer.
I saw a tweet yesterday from someone at the SuperMeet who said they saw a couple of Avid reps leaving the FCP X demo smiling. And based only on this brief preview of FCP X I doubt that is an exaggeration. I also heard that the crowd was split about 50/50 between people loving it and people being a bit apprehensive.

I had a chance to watch the full presentation this morning and some things looked very promising (compound clips, auditioning, clip metadata, new audio levels and key framing) while other things I'm less than sold on (magnetic timeline, digging through tons of footage in the new browser, possibly more mouse-centric interface, etc.,).

Can't say anything good or bad for sure though until it actually ships and gets into the wild.

I am saying yes for a 6G iPod in December, I'm not going to speculate if it will be a true video or not (but that would be nice).

I believe Apple will release a new 6G iPod come December beause of these two main reasons:
    1) The iPod Nano just had a HUGE overhaul and redesign, the last iPod release was a real non-event.
    2) Zune is being released Apple will definantly do something to steal the limelight from this product.

A WEEK iPhone battery life? Even if you cripple the phone by disabling features, there's still no way it would last even close to a week unless it's in sleep mode the entire time

Actually I usually can go about 3-4 days with my iPhone 4 without recharging. More if I pushed it. Managing what you do with it really helps. I don't watch videos on it and don't do a lot of network traffic so that really extends the battery life. I found that videos, games, and GPS are the biggest battery drains followed by net activity.

I realize where you're coming from.

Disks nowadays are definitely made from the same primary components (enterprise models used to provide different mechanicals, such as spindle motors and servos). But there are some differences (whether they matter or not is debatable, such as "cherry picked platters" and additional sensors), but as you mention, the firmware is significant in some cases (definitely with hardware RAID cards).

I'll believe that when I see a study that shows that, but with 200,000 disks in the Google & CMU studies showing, and Netapp's rep stating that theres not a reliability advantage, I think I'll save the extra cash unless I know I need to outlay it.

I'm not convinced of the previous heat arguments (sudden death; but in general with electronics, heat over time tends to have a negative effect on overall lifespan). As per vibration, I'm a bit torn (multiple arrays in the same enclosure and no rubber dampening, I'm concerned that the vibration could be a problem on the newer disk types as the platter densities are high and the heads ride closer to the surface than past disk designs - I did note that the articles have some age to them, and don't reflect disks made in the last few years; article is 4 years old).

If you check out the Google study (http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.pdf) theres a pretty clear correlation of heat, both too high and too low, to drive failure trends.

Then you're talking about a RAID card, enclosures, and enterprise disks (need them for the recovery time settings), where the disks alone would eat the majority of the budget ($8100 of it). That would leave $1900 for card/s and enclosures (SAS expander for backup disks and 1:1 port/disk ratio for the primary pool would likely be more cost effective).

Linux is a compromise, but based on the stated budget, it seems to be the way to go.

Sans Digital AS316X2HA, 16 disk RAID 6 DAS, $3295 @ Amazon including a RAID card and all cables, redundant power supplies. 14x Hitachi 0S03230's gives you 30 TB RAID-6 with 2 hot spares, and you still have 2 empty drive bays for expansion. Grand total $5255, and you can get a second identical setup for backup and you're only $510 over the $10k budget.

Run Mac native afpdserver and it will humiliate the Linux box performance-wise while being easier to maintain and integrate. Netatalk is great, but afpd has some serious performance issues, and avahi has some stability issues in my experience.

    Rob

i cant see the problem , it is just common sense if you move in another country that you conform with their customs if you want to live there , if you cant conform with that then just stay at home , even applies to.. tourists.

I really dislike this view. If you move to a country you should conform to their laws but not necessarily to the culture. Tourists should experience our culture (that's half the reason I love going on holiday) but it shouldn't be forced!

I don't like the idea of Islamic women wearing a veil, but it shouldn't be banned totally. Maybe restricted for security reasons (eg in airports) and maybe in schools so children can interact with their teacher better but not banned in public full stop. I do like the French law that says anyone who forces someone else to cover themselves should be prosecuted.

I don't mind if people move to the UK and don't learn English or live in a different way to me. It can be great to have other cultures around- just look at what it has done to English food (no longer meat + 2 veg like 50 years ago).

All I ask is that people contribute to UK society, they don't have to contribute to my specific culture.

I find it odd that they show two different ways of warning for phishing: the red bar and the sheet.
One design mistake: The sheet that comes out to say the website is a fraud covers up the URL bar, it should leave it visible in case there's a false positive and you want to check for yourself you didn't get redirected to the wrong site.

The revenue model for iPad magazines is just not going to work right now.

First, almost without exception, it's cheaper to get a print magazine mailed to me. I think few people can stomach paying more for electronic delivery, especially when there is SO, SO much free content online. This is the major problem, and it's not likely to change anytime soon.

Second, publishers are trying to make magazines more interactive, and this is very expensive. It takes a lot of time from designers, photographers, and so on. This increases costs and reduces available content on apps like The Daily. Instead, they should focus on adding content and making it easier to find and save. For example, why not a "clippings" section where you can save and print articles you like (ads on the page, though)?

Third, ads need to become more a part of online magazines. If I'm looking for a new iPad cover, I should be able to search ads in the MacWorld magazine. Adding user reviews a la Amazon would be even better. If the publishers want to add interactive features, ads are probably the most effective way to do this.

There are a lot of nutjobs who read this forum. And I mean a LOT.

People whose grasp of reality is so tenuous as to ignore the economics of consumer electronics manufacturing and the realities of Newtonian physics. It's quite sad, really.

The people who believed this rumor are the same people who would watch 3 expected Verizon iphone rumors come and go over a year's time and on reading the next one declare they "can't wait to get it" like it was fact and the previous false rumors had never happened. They never hear about the boy who cried wolf I guess. It explains how people can listen to a religious leader declare the end is coming on a particular date, watch the date come and go and continue following that leader as though nothing happened.

Could it be that he has to work for everything he has, but illegal immigrants get everything gratis, while their case awaits 'adjudication'?

Same thing happens here, in the frozen tundra.

I don't think the U.S. is even in the same ball-park, in this regard.

John explains it perfect, it's pretty much this. Like I said, I have no problem with people who legally enter this country, and pay taxes, etc. I also fell the same way about people who were born here in the UK, and decide not to work and claim money from the government. Yes we give people money not to work. Even if they have nothing wrong with them. I don't mind giving money to people who can't find a job, but recently it was exposed that 800,000 people are able to work, yet choose not to, because they don't want to work, and we pay them for this! But in all fairness Tories ( the government ) are going to change this soon.

What did the city officals think they were going to accomplish? This is cell phone service, there are no gaurantees of service quality enforced by law and a cell phone is by no means a necessity of life. If the service sucks, why doesn't everyone in town change carriers? That's what the free market is about.

Yea. but what to do when you were an AT&T customer, migrating to Cingular.. stuck in a contract.. with service that simply doesn't work.. then what is a 'customer' to do ??

Believe me, I had to fight TOOTH and NAIL with cingular.. took me almost a year to get OUT of a service that didn't work.

Yep, that fixed that issue on my MBP, too. I can now close the lid and it goes to sleep. Amazing!

The apple store had ordered me a new top case, motherboard, and sleep sensor to try and fix this. I guess they can send all that back. :)

It is funny how little things bug me. The heat never has bothered me.

But the damn thing not doing to sleep, really made me upset.

oh ok. so you will primary fold with just 4 systems, or 5?

right now i have 4 primary systems that i'm folding with, and i would love to build another, but not right now with the heat. maybe when it gets colder. sometimes i wish i had a basement to put them!

just so you know, you can fold with a 200 series and 400 series gpu in the same system. it took a little for me to get it to work, but it does.

let us know when you start building another rig. and how the overclock is coming!

I'll still use the mac pro so that would be 5 systems.

Heat is a problem for me too so the overclocking will have to wait a while and a new build will have to wait a couple of months.
