Don't tell me where to put my western values. It is not government's job to uphold the corporatocracy by putting employees in jail whenever their employer doesn't like what they did. Even worse in a communist country where the "employer" and the government might be one and the same. I have every right to know how governments treat their citizens if I might be buying their products.

In general, trade secrets are a civil matter in the US, not a criminal matter - there is no arrest, there is no go to jail, it is a financial matter.

LOL!! That's just bizarre. Theft of secrets is indeed a crime (http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode18/usc_sec_18_00001832----000-.html)in the USA, and that is Federal, not even left to State jurisdiction. You seem to feel that the USA is not run by big business, something you need to get over.

The country in the world that is most clearly run by business is South Korea, which is not communist.

IDisk is slow and put together like a school project.

Here is another way of stopping the whine (for a short time):
TURN ON BLUETOOTH and use a mouse!

At the office i work with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
When using a mouse it stops permanent.

At home i work without it and turn normaly bluetooth off.
Now i descovered that when i turn on bluetooth the whine stops ...
But when not using a bluetooth device it comes back after some time.

    Getting stranger every minute ....

Actually this used to be a macbook pro problem only.
After the efi firmware update it seems to spread to the macbooks (white, 1.83 here)

Id like to back CoffeeDrinker here. Referencing software a specialized software packages. Most of them will meet a long list of requirement, including (1) access and download of citation data and original documents to a dozen or sometimes more than a hundred paid or free databases, (2) managing large sets of references, often including the PDF of the original, in a meaningful way, and (3) create citations and lists of references in new texts, according to one of dozen (sometimes >100) formats prescribed by journals. This is all complicated because scientific disciplines are very different in terms of ways to cite (often for good reasons): medical researchers quite different form historians, and economics quote different from electrical engineers. With this complexity and with the widely diverging user needs, it would not make sense to me to have this all integrated into an office suite like Office.

While Endnote is certainly among the best known, there is a wide range of such programs, ranging in focus, functionality, and price (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_reference_management_software).

Id like to highlight Bookends, a Mac-specific program that is very reasonably priced and has served me and many other enthusiasts for already quite a while. Its developers offer great support and regularly implement needs expressed by their users. For students and other users that are on a tighter budget, Zotero offers a good open-source alternative.

    All the best, Rudi

This was my thought too, but it seems more likely that there will be another event before the end of the month (end of the week? next week?) introducing iWork and iLife 08. I can't figure out how or why they would make them both Leopard-only.
They don't need to be Leopard-only to be delayed until closer to Leopard's launch. The new products will undoubtedly take full advantage of new features in Leopard (but fall back gracefully for Tiger users--I'd imagine Panther people will be left in the dust, though). The products can't be demoed or released until more of Leopard's many loose ends come together; without a "wow" factor for new Leopard-based features, it's just an incremental update not worthy of keynote time.

It seems to me that this trend can be seen in most universities. A friend of mine works at the campus computer store, which is an offical apple reseller, and he sees this at work. He says that out of the stores notebook sales approx. 1/5 to 1/4 are macs.

On another note i'm in my first year now and i, as well as some of my friends, bought laptops this year. A good 10 out of 15 or so are macs, 3 mbps and the rest mbs.

I don't really like the idea of the macpro line-up having different chips.

I know in order to produce a quad lineup.. they'll have to, and it makes little difference to the end user.... but the idea of using "lesser" chips in the low end model bugs me.It bugs me the idea that Apple can't produce a middle-of-the-range machine. Something that doesn't have all the bells and whistles but runs well enough :) Ah well, to each their own!

Its called snap and it's the most distracting and annoying feature ever. And you cannot even disable it. I would prefer it if Apple thought up of something of their own rather than copy features off the opposition.

Personally, I and most of the people I know really like it (including a number of Mac users who have to use Windows 7 at my work). And for those that don't, you can indeed turn it off. There's an option in the "ease of use" area of control panel...If you can't find it, just google...

This is a feature I'd like to see in 10.7. Also, the Windows 7 Explorer's address bar "breadcrumbs" with the drop down subfolder list of any folder in your path is useful. I know Finder has the breadcrumb bar as an option, but the subfolder list is nice.

Should be a nice source of simaltaneous amusement and frustration :D

No, you can't play it via Media Access Control.

It kind erks me that I still have to have a gaming PC to max out current titles. Gosh I wish I Apple would up their GPU game so I could use the Mac for everything. :(

True, but Portal 2 is released for both MacOSX and Windows. :|

Why would it be shared? There are 8 empty lanes so couldn't there be two x4 slots for TBs so both get their own?

You can get Thunderbolt SSD once the enclosures start to arrive in a month or two.

How many display port connections can be had (I know technically the Radeon cards can do 6)? I would imagine to do something other than display mirroring would require separate DPs (or usage of DP 1.2).

All we need is someone with a iMac to post up their System Profiler page showing the connection of the GPU/TB.

Yea, the value for the price is not there. You can get the paper version of Wired for $10/yr via Amazon. Why would you pay the crazy prices for the digital version, if anything it should be even cheaper.

It's not Conde Nast being smarter its Conde Nast not knowing how to execute a digital strategy that works.

I think Apple is executing the entire category poorly. Actually, I think Apple needs to really re-vamp how things are organized in iTunes period. You would think periodicals would have their own category... nope. Most are tossed into "news" which is buried under apps and filled with misc things in the category. Unless you search for something specific, it's not easy to browse what is available. (They really need to clean up the entire app store. iPad books for example... subcategories with children's books or educational would be a welcome fix.)

I also have noticed a lot of Magazines not available for subscription and only single issue purchases. Perhaps it's that 30% cut Apple demands of the publishers? That's why you'll never see Wired for $10 a year for the iPad. The periodical industry doesn't make money off the news stand copies, it's the advertisements that really pay their bills which are based on circulation. It was interesting to see advertisers concerns as part of their reasoning for scaling back. It will be interesting to see as Android tablets pick up pace how options on that platform might differ in pricing and subscription availability as Google only takes 10%.

It's a shame because digital magazines really have the potential to re-energize the entire industry and offer something more interactive over a print edition.

A great runner's iPod. You could actually clip this thing to the back of your hat on a non-fitted hat or the brim, get some really short headphone cords, and it would be like not wearing anything at all...in terms of an iPod. :D

Quick questions - How does folding with multiple GPU in a rig work? Do you use one GPU client and all the GPUs fold that one WU faster or do you use a GPU client for each card?

One client per card. So I will have 5 clients in total running. 4 GPU and 1 SMP.

Sadly, this recommendation has a lot of merit. I don't know about the UK, but here in the states, the pre-college school system is systemically boring. Hardly a day goes by that my kids are not skilled-drilled and tested so schools can prove they are "teaching" the kids.

Well here in New Zealand you need to get NCEA levels from high school in order to get any job, so studying to get those NCEA levels is pretty important :)
